A Darker Gray Is Breaking Through A Lighter One
Today Phoebe and I went to the gym. When I wasn’t gawking at the gym TV, I noticed that the magazine rack featured a recent issue of “Non Satis Scire,” Hampshire’s official magazine. I thought this very exciting and mysterious until Phoebe suggested I look at the mailing address on the back cover: it was my family’s. Apparently my mom left her copy the last time she was at the gym.
Less pathetic Hampshire advertising: Amherst (the town in which Hampshire College, Amherst College, and the University of Massachusetts are located) was recently named the number one college town in the U.S. I’m not sure I believe that, but it’s cool that somebody thinks so.
Oh! As for Winnipeg. Here are… THE BANDS I SAW AT WINNIPEG IN 2009:
C.R. Avery, Belle Orchestre, Bellowhead, The Dust Poets, Ridley Bent, Mark Berube and the Patriotic Few, Neko Case, Chatham County Line, Alex Cuba, Amelia Curran, Dala, Deep Dark Woods, The Del McCoury Band, Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas, Vance Gilbert, Great Lake Swimmers, Arlo Guthrie, Tom House, Iron & Wine, King Sunny Ade, Kobo Town, Alana Levandoski, Mirah, Pacific Curls, Pacifika, Steven Page, La Part du Queteux, Joe Pug, Punch Brothers (feat. Chris Thile), Josh Ritter, Okkervil River, Serena Ryder, Oumou Sangare, Burning Spear, Visthen, Loudon Wainwright III, Patrick Watson, Jah Youssouf and the Woodchoppers Association
Watch Out: Some of those videos are fucking cool.
And one final bit of commentary that came about on the drive back:
Only in the Midwest does “Pleasure Land” refer to a giant RV lot.

YOU SAW THE PUNCH BROTHERS UND CHRIS THILE??? I’m jealous! The sideporch trio is learning a Chris Thile song (Back in Time) and I’ve been listening to Punch a whole bunch (and I had a hunch at brunch when my cereal went crunch).
See you in two minutes.

Ooh, I like the art in this one a lot. Is it inspired by anyone in particular? Also, I am jealous of your festival adventure.

My mom was commenting just the other day that scrolling through possible tv viewing options revealed three shows in a row with an, “and Pregnant,” title, one called, “Obese and Pregnant.” My mom does not, however, get any copies of Non Satis Scire in the mail. Or maybe she’s leaving them in random places before I even see them.

That’s it, I’m going to Winnipeg next summer, and damn the expense!

Goldfeather: MWA HA HA I win the bluegrass award–THIS time…
David: Haaaa, I’m glad you like the style. It’s called “I bought the cheap ink and it was super crappy and light.” Also, “my nib broke and the town art store only has teeny-tiny nibs that I’m not crazy about.” Also, “I was rushed.”
Tabitha: The particular episode of “Sixteen and Pregnant” we were watching could definitely have doubled as “Obese and Pregnant.” I can’t believe that’s actually a show. But I’m sure that, were projected into my home, I’d watch it.
Casey: You should go! And soon–this year saw an alarming increase in hipsters and security. The folksy/hippie/pot-scented Winnipeg I was introduced to may soon be a thing of the past…
Dad: Thanks for the additional links. WordPress made me “moderate” your comment to make sure it wasn’t spam.

Yeah, I’m not sure if I agree with it either, however I do agree with these results:
1) Amherst – At college there
2) Berkeley – Lived there for years, here for the Summer
3) Montréal – Going to live there after college (and walk about)
4) Washington, D.C. – (Let’s just ignore this one)
5) Boston – Live there when I’m not at college (kinda… technically speaking…)

4 for 5!
July 22nd, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Chris: 3, 4, and 5 are all pushing it.
2 out of 5 = FAIL.

How do you know there’s not more to “Pleasure Land” than first meets the eye. Maybe it’s ALL about pleasure, and we’ve been stereotyping the folks who drive the RVs.

oh GROSS, mom.
