This comic seems like a good reason to get on my plus-size model soapbox again.

Today’s model is Crystal Renn. As plus-size models go, she is probably the most famous, because she is that one bizarre case where her career actually became way more successful after she decided to stop starving herself and become permanently “plus-sized.” Here is a nice little Jezebel summary of how fucked up the fashion industry is:

“Renn, who is America’s highest-paid plus-size model, was discovered by a modeling agent at age 13 and told she could be on the cover of Vogue… if she just lost 70 pounds. She starved herself down to a size 0 and secured a modeling contract, but was still told she was too fat.”

Jezebel ran a number of great pieces about Renn this September (here’s an article, here’s an interview), in honor of her new memoir, “Hungry.” I’m always a bit wary of celebrity memoirs that require a co-writer, as Renn’s did. But that didn’t stop me from reading Jenna Jameson’s book in like, a day, so I’ll probably get around to Renn’s eventually too.

At any rate, the moral is, Crystal Renn = cool chick. (Even if her name does sound a little porn-y.)
