Let Him Eat Cake

This is the third comic to feature Jean. I guess the French can be funny. Who knew? The first time I drew Jean, I gave him no mustache. The second time, I gave him quite the skeazeball mustache. Today I have settled on something in between. It is the most accurate depiction of Jean’s facial hair so far. Also, in the first panel, Jean is joined by Nick, his partner-in-bromance. It doesn’t really look like Nick. I’m sorry, Nick.

This weekend I got to catch up with an ex (I guess you could call him) who was visiting Hampshire for the weekend. This charming young man once got me into the STUPIDEST argument about the best film of 1994. Forrest Gump won the Oscar that year, but many intelligent people have come to the conclusion that Pulp Fiction was actually the better film. Somehow we got talking about this, and he was arguing for Forrest Gump, just to get a rise out of me. So I asked our friend The Movie Buff what he thought, and he said Quiz Bowl, just to get a rise out of both of us. I’ve since discovered that Blank Check also came out in 1994. After a recent screening in Mod 83, I must admit my vote is for that one.

Anyway, the whole Pulp vs. Gump debate was one of the final straws that lead to me dumping that guy (after a whopping two weeks of dating). I did it at a “Queercore” concert at Smith, right after he pulled me into the hall to tell me that one of our mutual friend’s grandparents had just died. I was all, “Man, that sucks… Oh, and I think we should break up.”

There were some OTHER FACTORS, I promise. For instance, the fact that this dude always, always stabbed a bite of food off of my plate when he came up to my table in the dining hall. Jesus fucking Christ.

He’s an asshole, but he’s an okay asshole. It was nice to share a beer with him.

The word bubble with the maple leaves and hockey pucks is like, comic gold.

I was there for that argument about the best movie of 1994! I remember thinking, “why are these people arguing over the best movie of 1994? We were, like, eight years old.” I guess Pulp Fiction, along with most Tarantino movies, is pretty divisive (“It was amazingr!” vs. “No, fuck you, it was just okay!”), but still… 1994?

Anyway, I don’t know what my favorite movie 1994 was, but after that argument I sought out and watched Quiz Show, which I had never even heard of, and I thought it was damn good. What about it got rises outta y’all?

PS I like this comic a lot, and the girl’s facial range is hilarious.

    Hannah: Thank you, love!

David: Okay, OKAY. There were a lot of dumb arguments at that SAGA table. That was probably one of the more tolerable ones.
As for Quiz Show, I think we were just annoyed that Drew refused to pick an existing side of the argument, and therefore helped neither of our causes. I’ve seen Quiz Bowl; I think it’s all right, but I’m probably too much of a rabid Tarantino fan to be helpful. Though maybe it’s just that the real dudes from the Quiz Show scandal strike me as more fascinating than the Hollywood version:
