Pick a Little, Talk a Little

Well, that’s it: I’m done. This comic sums up everything I ever try to say in comics, everything I ever blather on and on about in person. I’ve got nothing else.

Somehow I have a feeling I’m gonna keep talking (and making comics) anyway.

Hey, so I had two terrific Hampshire Faculty experiences today! First, I had an 11:00 o’clock meeting with Thom Haxo, who teaches the “Sequential Imagery” classes here. I took that class in the fall of my second year at Hampshire;  Mod 71 was my final project. But the influence “Sequential Imagery” had on me was far bigger; I’ve worked on comics pretty much every single day of my life since then.  So MANY THANKS are due to Thom! Anyway, today we met and talked comics, and he looked at some of the stuff I’ve been doing (Minnipeg, my most recent summer comic, some Action Athena stuff, and the beginnings of my Div III), and gave me some great advice—not just about comics, but about Art, and Hampshire, and Life. Thom is an incredible man; I hope I’ll see more of him as the year goes on!

My second terrific faculty experience was with Ellie Siegel. Waiting for me in my mailbox was a postcard she’d sent me from Northfield, MN! Her daughter just started attending college there, and I knew Ellie was flying out for a visit, but finding the postcard was a delight. Especially since she referred to Northfield as “Stars Hollow, Minnesota, where life is sweet, and cows are contented.” She then added: “There’s room for some more edgy comic art, though!” (She’s been asking me to do a comic about Northfield, and I would LOVE to, but it’s one of my Big, Ambitious, Backburner ideas, along with a comic about the history of Hampshire College, and a comic about the history of my love life… All of these ideas would require a great deal of research, interviews, and, well, TIME. Damnit.) Anyway, the point is, Ellie is awesome (and also from Minnesota!), and I’m glad she was on my Div II committee.

Hampshire is an interesting place. I don’t always love it, but it is still the place for me.

if you’re taking suggestions…I think that “Romeo to Romee-ette” is pretty raw material

P.S. ISN’T DIV 3 ABOUT HAVING TIME TO DO THAT BIG ASS PROJECT IDEA YOU’VE BEEN COOKING UP FOR THREE YEARS PRIOR? NOT TO STEP ON YOUR TOES, I MEAN, YOU PROBS ALREADY HAVE A SUPER AWESOME DIV 3 IDEA/ARE ALMOST HALFWAY DONE WITH IT…. GEEZE, WAY TO BE WAY TOO LATE ALIYA…

Becca: Romeo to Romeo-ette is so raw, our parents DID NOT KNOW what to do with it. I will keep that one in mind…

Aliya: He’s so great! And he’s not even on my committee, but he’s being so helpful! I will tell him you think he’s great the next time I see him.
As for big-ass projects I’m not doing… Man, I dunno. Projects about Minnesota history, or Hampshire history, would require a lot of research time. I’d want to do it right, and do it big. Doing that much research, and THEN writing/drawing a full-length graphic novel…it’s not the right size for Div III. I’m covering a lot of my favorite subjects in the Div III I’m doing though, so it’s proving enjoyable, and good practice.

Woah, WOAH. I just realized that the topics for my four magazines are all practice runs of these potential Big-Ass Projects. Huh. Cool. I’m even more into my Div III now.
