Pillow Talk

Bonus post! This entry is for Phil McAndrew’s latest contest. The rules were to draw a scene from your favorite movie (or any movie), and have fun with it. And I succeeded in having fun! I really like sketching out movie stills. You guys may remember that I participated in another drawing contest that Phil held last summer, in which participants drew themselves at age 100. I love these contests. It’s so fun to see what other people come up with.

If you’re unfamiliar with “Pillow Talk”…you’re really missing out. It’s a fantastic film. All the things that the current manchild movies (which I also mentioned in my last Phil McAndrew post!) get wrong, “Pillow Talk” gets so, so right. It’s timeless. The first time I saw it (last spring in Berlin), I was happily surprised by how much I liked all the characters, and how many of the jokes are still funny. I liked it so much that I watched it again the next morning. This year, I have watched it four more times. It’s one of those classic old movies where all the lines are so appealingly well-timed, it’s rhythmic, lyrical. Movies like this are really comforting to have on in the background while you’re drawing.

I took a bunch of screenshots of the film while I was picking out which part to draw.  I figured I’d post them up here so you could share in my fun:

p01
“Tu es une inspiration, Yvette.”

p02
“There’s nothing in my bedroom that bothers me!”
“Aw. That’s too bad.”

p03
“What a MARVELOUS looking man. I wonder if he’s single?”
“I don’t know how long I can get away with this…but she’s sure worth a try!”

p04
“Mr. Allen, this may come as a shock to you, but there are some men who don’t end every sentence with a proposition!”

(Gotta love all those split screen telephone calls.)

And then the grand finale scene:

p05
(Out of Doris’ girly apartment (she’s an interior decorator)…)

p06
(Into the elevator…)

p07
(Onto the street…)

p08
(Past a cop…)

p09
(Across a street…)

p10
(And into Rock’s apartment, which Doris has viciously redecorated to get back at him.)
“It’s customary for the groom to carry the bride across the threshold.”

    Lady (walking away): “Uh huh.”
Elizabeth: “Same town as Goodbye Blue Monday”

And to think that it used to bum me out when I babysat late and Doris Day movies were all there was to watch on tv. I guess I wasn’t cool enough to appreciate them…
