Happy Day in Noho

I am very much enjoying playing with text and speech bubbles these days.

For those who do not know Chris Sommer: he is awesome. He’s incredibly skilled at creating special effects, whether it’s with computer animation, or handmade sugar glass. He used to run the Necronomicon group at Hampshire: they tested various old-fashioned special effects (for instance, smashing a bunch of fruit with a hammer and recording the sounds for use as gorey sound effects in low-budget horror movies). He is a huge fan of Lloyd Kaufman and B-movies. He was also accepted into M fuckin I fuckin T, but chose to go to Hampshire instead because he didn’t want to be limited in his educational path. As someone who also chose Hampshire over a more prestigious institution (the Tisch Dramatic Writing program at NYU—though my initial reason for not going was more financial than free-spirited), and as someone who is now exploring “alternative” MFA programs, I was thrilled to pick Chris’ brain for the duration of that bus ride. He’s also just one of the nicest guys ever.

Anyway, here’s an awesome mask he made for me back during my first year, when he was putting together a sci-fi spoof trailer:

NoHo is pretty cool. Downtown Sounds, Raven Books, and lots of great restaurants.

That bus system is pretty hip, too.

    That mask is GANZ creeps.

Also, I meant to tell you that I found your Minipeg in my violin case, and I showed to it everyone in the pit orchestra for Hamlet (there was a lot of down time…) They loved it!! I’m spreading your fame like cream cheese on a goddamn bagel.

I was going to say I’m sorry if my phone call made you miss your bus, but then I read the last panel. Do I get to say you are welcome? I LOVE the weird blue face and even though I don’t usually condone wasting food…love the idea of smashing fruit with hammers. It got me thinking about not only the different sounds of the fruit, but of the hammers, too. A rubber mallet vs. a ball peen. A 16 oz. vs a tack hammer. Lots of possibilities…

Oh Man, I saw Chris Sommer and Jacob Lefton walking through the Hampshire corn field on my way to Atkins today and I had to stop and think about what year it was. It was confusing.

Dad: We’ve gotta make the most of hanging out in Noho when you guys are here for commencement.

Goldfeather: Daw, thank you! I love it that you’re spreading Action Athena. Spread it like the measles.
