Into the Shadows of My Embrace

My favorite song of 2009.

Also, guess who’s been going running every day for the last four weeks?  This lady!  And lifting weights almost every day too except when it’s too late and the gym is closed and then I just run farther, IN THE DARK!  It turns out that exercise helps me feel way calmer and happier.  Who knew, right?

Oh geez, so tomorrow night is the big show!  I hope it’ll be good.  I got a sort of test run over the weekend (with PowerPoint, not guitar), because I was asked to speak with four other cool ladies (and professor Nell Arnold!) as part of a panel for Accepted Students Day.  We shared examples of our work and talked about being students in the writing program.  Which means I guess I am part of the writing program.  I wasn’t even sure I was part of the school of Interdisciplinary Arts!  I am finding out a lot about My Place At Hampshire during these last weeks.

Damn, I’m impressed! You’re an official bad ass! I bet you can out-run your sister with that lung capacity of yours!

Athena. I really really really like that Why? song. And just now, I was in the Book House and read a comic book called Dykes to Watch Out For. I really wanted to buy it and send it to you but I’m too poor. You’d like it though I think. I fucking loved it.

Thanks, Phoebs! We should try running together this summer.

Madelyn, I. LOVE. Dykes to Watch Out For. I discovered them in online form during my junior year of high school, and stayed up waaaay late one night going through the archives. Around midnight, I was inspired by the character Mo to give myself a short haircut. It took less than ten snips. It was an awful haircut, but man what a great comic. I own the big anthology now. And I saw Alison Bechdel speak in Amherst a couple years ago. Her memoir, “Fun Home,” is absolutely incredible. It received TIME’s “Best Book of the Year” award in 2006. That’s BOOK, not just COMIC.

    Hi Athena,

You don’t know me, but I’m a second year and have really enjoyed your stuff in The Omen and right here on ActionAthena.com. I’m sort of looking to possibly go into comics for my Div III and you’ve been a bit of an inspiration. :) I’m really excited to go to your Div III presentation. Good luck!

Juliet, thanks so much for commenting! I’m totally thrilled to know that an underclassman whom I don’t know personally enjoys Action Athena. And I am PARTICULARLY thrilled to think that I might have inspired a fellow Hampshire student to pursue comics! Best of luck to you–and spend plenty of time with Thom Haxo.

Goldfeather: Oh geez! Hello, Vassar fans!

    Dad: THANKS!
    Mom: THANKS!!!!!
    (I love you both dearly.)
