When She Was 22
Today I am 22 years old, and according to Lily Allen I had better appreciate it, because the future ain’t always gonna look this bright.
SO HOW WAS THE SHOW?
It was pretty great! By my count, there were more than 45 people there. A million thanks to each and every one of you who cared enough about me to come see me get up there and talk about my stuff! It meant a lot.
I played all six of my songs without any major issues (okay, so the guitar strap was a little wobbly), and I had AWESOME help from my photographer, Molly Mcleod, and my videographer, Joe Fenstermaker, without whom things would have been far, far less professional. Seriously, without Joe, tech issues might’ve made the entire performance impossible. He is a genius. So keep an eye out for fantastic photos and video footage of the show, because they’ll be a-coming.
So what now? I’ve got my final committee meeting on Tuesday at noon. That is basically the LAST academic thing I have to do at Hampshire. If they say, “Athena, you pass,” I can go ring that Div III bell and then…do what I like, I guess! My May plans are basically to walk around outside a lot, be drunk frequently, get laid if anyone will have me, and make a minicomic for Lutefisk Sushi! HOOOOORRRRAAAAAY!

Hey Athena -
Happy Birthday. I hope that at some point in the day you eat something more nutritious than lime chips and cheese goo.
Glad to hear that the show was pretty great. Yeah, I’ve been told a few times to spend a little bit more on the guitar strap, but I continue to ignore this advice too.
As for your month of May, I encourage you to aim a little higher. How about mastering the entire Hank Williams portfolio?

HAPPY FREAKING FRACKING BIRTHDAY ARONI AND CHEESE. I’m glad the show went swimmingly, and I’m sorry I couldn’t be there!!!
Your dad is wrong, in addition to lime chips and cheese goo you need to eat at least one pan of pudding cake. That will pregame anything else you might want to do on your birthday–and beyond!!!

AND a moist cake, if possible. Happy birthday, Athena! I’m jealous of all the Hampshire folk that got to see you perform.

THANK YOU for a free concert that also had COMICS!
(I also did not once hear mention of the phrase “for social justice.” Earing you a space in the Valhalla of my bitter heart. YAY!)

You are 34 days older than me. Flaunt it.

Dear Athena,
Happy Birthday! Congrats on your Div III what not and THANK YOU for sending me your burn book what not. I cannot wait until you publish a real graphic novel of sorts (not that the burn book is not real, but something bigger, you know?). Don’t listen to Lily Allen, YOU WILL AGE GRACEFULLY!

Athena your show was great and everything you do is great and though your choices are not my choices you seem to be doing pretty OK but I have to say
hint of lime? Really? How can you eat that?
Love and hugs,
Evan

Oh man, you guys are great. I love you all.
And William: thanks for being excited about my theoretical graphic novel. As opposed to spending my final days of college drinkin’ and sexin’, I am actually spending vast quantities of time planning just such a project. I really hope I’ll keep it up.
