Dog Dreams

Tomorrow at noon is my final Div III meeting.  I will let you know how that goes.

For now I will tell you a little about my weekend.  There was actually no birthday cheese dip (Chris and I learned recently  that Costco has stopped carrying it!), but there was a giant jar of artichoke hearts.  All’s well that ends well.  I got to see Housemate Hannah’s burlesque show. She did indeed do an S&M interpretation of “16 Going On 17.”  I also had a sunny lunch with Kate by the Hampshire tree.  And I set up two interview dates, ’cause I’ve been asked to do two Burn Book-related interviews (with DART and the Hampshire Admissions department).  Hampshire likes me!  I’m excited!

MOST IMPORTANTLY, I uploaded an AWESOME Burn Book summary/dress-up doll.  To check it out, click that hot pink button in the sidebar!  All the Flash work was done by another friend named Hannah.  She graduated from Hampshire in 2009 and was a co-founder of the ol’ Fire & Ice Burlesque troupe that I loved so much.  I’ve never worked with Flash, but thanks to her, all I had to do was make a few drawings.  She took care of the rest.  I am eternally indebted to her for this!

But now I must switch gears and talk about my dad and his amazing birthday gifts.  See, all through my four years of college, he’s been clipping and sending me Duluth cartoonist Chris Monroe’s weekly “Violet Days” strip from the Star Tribune, every single week.  And I’ve been saving them in my desk drawer.  So he decided that for this birthday, he was gonna send me her book collection, “Ultra Violet,” only he couldn’t find it anywhere, ’cause it’s out of print, so he contacted MONROE HERSELF, and she is now SENDING ME A COPY!!!

As if that weren’t enough, he also mailed me an (empty) box of the new Grainbelt Nordeast, which I have been stalking for some time now.  Because I love the Twin Cities, particularly Nordeast Minneapolis (didja know that’s where the Minneapolis Cartoonist Conspiracy meetings happen?), and I love Grainbelt for being a cheap local beer and now these things have come together in some kind of glorious union.  I imagine Dad and I will drink some together as soon as I get home.

I LOVE this strip. Strange…I have been having building dreams, too. I can see the house as I write. Dad and I live in this huge, really cool 60′s place WITH ANOTHER COUPLE who we really don’t know. We have plenty of room, but I realize there’s another whole house attached. I go looking at it, it’s really cool, and then I realize someone is living there. It turns out to be David Maitland. No idea what it means. Funny, though…there were no dogs in the dream.

Gotta love the hick clothes. Of course, I wore flannel shirts, overalls and “shitkickers” in high school.

    Hey Athena -

    Grain Belt Nordeast is excellent.

    It’s a little bit hick, a little bit hip…

…and maybe a touch slutty and nerdy too.

  5. Bruce Says:

Chris Monroe has a Fan Club on Facebook if you’d like to get news on her career:

Mom: Okay, from now on, I’m gonna blame ALL of my architecture-related dreams on you. Though I think yours are weirder.

Dad: Ha! I’m glad the new Grainbelt tastes like my Div III. Maybe if f I invent a beer, I’ll name it Burn Book.

Bruce: My dad and I just joined that group! Chris Monroe is amazing.

Madelyn: Dang, I really want to visit your place sometime! I wonder how far you are from Diamond’s?
