Lutefisk Sushi D
Note: With less than two weeks left until I fly back to Minnesota , I am dedicating this week to the Minneapolis comics community. Today is about Lutefisk Sushi.
So what, you ask, is this Lutefisk Sushi D? And what the hell is meant by this trailer for it?
Lutefisk Sushi is a collection of minicomics by Minnesotan cartoonists. It happens almost annually. Each collection features a different local cartoonist; this time, it’s the incomparable Danno Klonowski, whose drawings I have often ogled at Conspiracy jams, and whom I was lucky enough to have as a table mate at the Indy Comics Week event at the Source in December. Danno’s art rocks; they couldn’t have picked a better feature artist.
In case you’re curious about the anthology’s name, the “Lutefisk” part refers to the large amount of Scandinavians in the state (and their love for that smelly gelatinous fish), and the “Sushi” part is because the comics get boxed up in beautiful hand silk-screened bento boxes. The “D” is because this is the fourth collection. Anyone in Minnesota is allowed to contribute, and I highly encourage all those eligible to do so. The deadline is June 15.
I’m in the middle of making my own 16-page minicomic right now, and I’m very excited about it. I can’t wait to see everyone else’s–especially the original art that will be on display at Altered Esthetics this August. The Sushi gallery show will coincide with the first ever Minneapolis Indie Xpo (MIX), which is happening nearby, at the Soap Factory. I’ve got my MIX table reserved, so I fully intend to be there all day, and at Altered Esthetics afterward. Minnesota friends: join me!
The Lutefisk Sushi gallery opening is August 6. There will be also an artists’ discussion about the project during MIX. Details are here.
PS There was a bonus post on Sunday, complete with photos of Burn Book!

Hi Athena! Thanks for the nice words! FYI there is NO artists discussion during MIX. That’s old info–instead there will just be MIX and then the MIX after-party will be back at ALTERED ESTHETICS. Whether or not i’ll make a drunken, embarrassing speech that no one asks for has yet to be seen. And as far as the trailer goes—SUSHI ‘D’ is in 3-D!!!…and Zander Cannon will personally pop out of each box!

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. Too bad, though: I bet that would’ve been a cool discussion. But I’m still excited for your drunken embarrassing speech.
And I’ll hold you to this: Zander Cannon will pop out of each bento box, or your money back!
