The Conspiracy Supper

Here are some members (and fictional characters) of the Minneapolis Cartoonist Conspiracy.  The Cities are teeming with cartoonists, so it would have been easy to draw three times as many figures into this, but I stuck to the ones with whose work I’m more familiar.  Blogging for the Cross Hatch has helped a lot to familiarize me with the Minneapolis cartooning scene!

From left to right:

  1. Jon Sloan’s Sa-Bom Jim.  I met Jon at the first St Paul Conspiracy Jam I went to, during the summer of 2007.
  2. Ryan Dow and his Lil’ Buddha.  I’ve mentioned Ryan’s work before.  This spring, he received the award for best webcomic at SPACE in Columbus, OH.  His new book is The Art of Failing Buddhism.
  3. Dan Olson. Dan’s current series Shenanigans is online and starts here.  Read it.
  4. Bob Lipski’s Uptown Girl, Brian Bastian’s Tommy Chicago, and Danno Klonowski’s Fleming Hazmat. These three characters all recently appeared in a gigantic three-way crossover comic.
  5. The Cartoonist Conspiracy logo.
  6. Steve Stwalley and his Soapy the Chicken.  Stwalley founded the Cartoonist Conspiracy in December of 2002.
  7. Kevin Cannon’s Army Shanks, of Far Arden fame. Far Arden is online in its entirety. It’s also up for an Eisner and has a neat origin story. Kevin’s 24-hour comics (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007) are also all online. Plus this mini called “Our Endangered Cartoonists.”
  8. Zander Cannon There’s no relation between the Cannons.  However, they both attended Grinnell (nine years apart) and went on to found Big Time Attic.  Shad Petovsky was also a founding member, but he (and other local heroes) eventually split off into PUNY Entertainment.  PUNY does animation; Big Time Attic sticks to illustration.  The Cannons talked about this recently in a mini documentary. Note: the Big Time Attic blog is a veritable goldmine of useful tips for cartoonists.
  9. Will Dinski is a maker of beautiful comics and printed things and was recently nominated for the Maisie Kukoc award. He’s also the boyfriend of Sarah Morean.
  10. Bud Burgy’s Continuity Guy.  Continuity Guy is an ongoing series by Burgy and Danno Klonowski.
  11. Dan Murphy.  Dan and Danno have been collaborating on comics since the beginning of time.
  12. Mike Toft’s giant rabbit from Brain Food.  The Brain Food series has been “radiating love since 1996.”

Do these folks every have live music at their events?

  2. Bob Lipski Says:

that looks great! thanks for including Uptown Girl. she looks happy to be there.

  3. Danno Klonowski Says:

Live music? At show openings–like this August’s LUTEFISK SUSHI–yes. At the monthly jams–no, but that might be nice.

  4. Daniel Olson Says:

Thanks Athena! Unfortunately, I had to change the name of my comic to Hijinks, because Oni Press already has a book named Shenanigans. Otherwise, this is a really cool piece! Hopefully I’ll be seeing ya soon!

  5. Jon Sloan Says:

Athena, this has to be one of the best tributes to The ICC I have seen yet! I will definitely print and frame this image to go on the wall with all my other pin-ups I’ve collected, but you’ll have to sign it first! Hope to see you soon!

  6. Steven Stwalley Says:

What a fun piece, Athena! That paper looks delicious!

  7. Dan Murphy Says:

That’s awesome Athena, thanks! I feel so honored to be included .

  8. Hannah Says:

All these people look really cool, but let’s see some more WOMEN CARTOONISTS! >:D

  9. Jon Sloan Says:

Not to worry, Hannah! We have powerhouse women cartoonists as well! Britt Hammerberg, Lupi McGinty, and Vas Littlecrow Wojtanowicz are really awesome! Lupi was an artist on “False Witness: The Michele Bachmann Story”, Britt had the cover to the City Pages comix issue two years ago, and Vas is a wonderful artist, and a very outspoken supporter for The Conspiracy!
