Neat Freak Artists Unite

Happy Friday!  Lest you’ve forgotten, the Lutefisk Sushi D gallery opening is tonight!!!  See you there!

Also Important:
* Westboro Baptist Church (remember them?) vs. Comic Con = Nerds For The Win!!1!
* Excellent life advice from one of the great loves of my life.
* Another photo of me at Zinefest. (Reading great autobio comics by Toby Jones.)

Finally, let me introduce a new segment I’ll be referring to as Athena’s College Loan Countdown.  In a recent comic, I casually quoted my loans due at “$7,000.”  The actual number was $7,751.  But thanks to a recently sent paycheck (equal parts my money and my parents’), I am now $1,000 less indebted, bringing the loan total down to $6,751.  I will be posting updates as this number decreases.  Artistic AND organized? CHECK!

PS Some of you may recognize the lady in the first panel from an old comic.

You know this one is near and dear to my heart. When other teachers first come into my room after having only met me elsewhere, they say “Wow! You’re so organized. I thought since you’re creative, your room would be crazy.” But it’s the order that ALLOWS me to do all sorts of creative stuff with my kids.

I loved the grandmother panel. Good to know her spirit lives on…

So, are you setting up an ActionAthena PayPal account for contributions to your College Loan Countdown?

  3. Ian Says:

    great comic.

The counter-protest pictures definitely made me giggle. If you REALLY want to impress people about paying down student loans however, you’re going to need a much larger sum to work with. You’re maybe at a third of the national average, and as I’ve said, it’s a comprehensible sum, which changes the whole game psychologically (not encumbered by the “what’s the fucking point?” principle). Tell you what though, since I know this is going to be a popular traffic-driving feature, I’m willing to cut you in on some of my debt. Not all of it granted (I need to retain a LITTLE bit of the illusion that I suffered for my American college-educated privilege, right?), but enough to boost you up to the national average, or somewhere around that. Keep in mind, I’m only making this offer once, and I’ve had some VERY interested prospects currently slumming it in Brooklyn. Act now, and you can get free shipping on delinquent car payments from my biological father!

Love this. Also, I love the Westboro Baptist Church counterattack. All brilliant.

    GREAT comic!

The paypal idea is brilliant. Isn’t that how the whole Julie and Julia thing went?

Thanks for the compliments on the comic, all of you! You are all people I think of as being creative artists–I am glad to know you all identify with the neat freak/organized part of things too.

Also, to Tabitha: Heh, sorry for all the loan moanin’. I recognize that compared to the average college student, I’m not doing so bad. However, I also don’t have any current plans to go to grad school (maybe ever?). I might really just keep doing this cartoonist/barista thing for…a long time. That makes me feel like I’ve got to take this (albeit small) loan more seriously than, for example, my friends and family members who are graduating from med schools in the next few years. Obviously their loans are way bigger than mine, but their eventual paychecks will presumably be much bigger too. But I’m sorry if my whining got a little out of hand…

To the parents: hmm, maybe PayPal isn’t a terrible idea…
